Stroll Hot Stuff

KIDTOWN

Spanning the lower six blocks of Solano in Albany is Kidtown where most of the activities for younger kids can be found. The Albany Twin Theater has free cartoons from 10-3:30PM. There's giant slides, bounce rooms, spin art, and skeeball. The Buddy Club shows off new performers for kids every 15 minutes at their own stage at Evelyn & Solano. Lots of children perform during the day including martial art demonstrations, Ballet Folklorico dancers, , we feature wonderful young performers. There's lots of face painters and this year, we are featuring Doctor Solar and his Traveling Medicine Show, performing at Kains and Solano, 10 / 2 / and 4PM.

SOLANO'S STAGE DOOR

Booths from our fantastic local performing art organizations line up to take a bow between Fresno and Colusa. Pick up a subscription to some of the hottest shows on the West Coast, enter raffles for free tickets, or find out about auditions or volunteering.

ART CAR FEST

These wonders of the road will be parked near 1275 Solano under the BART. For more info about their month-long festival go to http://artcarfest.com.

HANG GLIDING SIMULATOR

Wanna be a bird? Get a free lesson on Mission Soaring Center's virtual hang gliding simulator at Ensenada and Solano where you can at least get your feet off the hot pavement for a while!

GASOLINE-FREE PARADE (Well, almost!)

Only the Fire Engines are allowed into the parade with gasoline engines. People-power, solar, electric, and bio-diesel are the ways to ride in style during the parade that starts at 10AM this year!

  • Take BART to the North Berkeley station where you can pick up a free shuttle to the festival about every 15 minutes. Shuttle will drop you at the Marin Fire Station at The Alameda & Marin Ave., one block from the top of Solano. To return to BART, the shuttle will pick you up on the SW corner of Marin and The Alameda.

THE GREENING OF THE STROLL

Bay Area Green Business Program

Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Restore and Recycle.
That is the Motto of the 2007 Solano Avenue Stroll.

Each year another green feature has been added to this enormous community event. We feel it is our responsibility to tread more lightly on the planet. Our basic starting point is to RETHINK event production and resource usage. What comes in, what goes on, what goes out after a one-day party for 250,000 people?

Green Mary, who is a VZW or "Virtually Zero Waste" Event Producer, has helped green the Stroll for the past few years, but this year the City of Berkeley's Tania Levy is inspiring us to double our efforts. Working with the City of Albany, this "Green Dream Team" is going to set the standard for Community Events like the Solano Avenue Stroll.

Everyone selling food is going to use paper and compostable plastic. There will be "Eco Stations" with composting and recycling containers at EVERY INTERSECTION. We are aiming for ten percent true waste, and have categorically outlawed items such as Styrofoam and plastic straws.

PACK IT IN - PACK IT OUT???

Well, not exactly but here are some ways you can help alleviate the mass quantities of trash that are generated.

  • Bring your own fork and spoon or use one made out of compostable potato starch.
  • Refill your water bottles instead of purchasing new ones.
  • There is no Styrofoam allowed at the Stroll.
  • Six compost stations have been set up along Solano with staff to show you how to separate your food scraps and compostable greenware from items that are recyclable and finally, what's left goes into the trash. Plus, there is a recycling bin next to each trash container all along Solano so please use them.

GOING GREEN

On Solano above Fresno, Environmental alley hosts most of the 'green' info booths. Some of the "Green Booths" you can find at the Solano Avenue Stroll are these:

  • There's a halogen torchiere lamp swap at the Rising Sun Energy Center booth at 1182 Solano at Cornell where you can trade in energy-hogging halogen floor lamps for FREE fluorescent floor lamps.
  • Pick up vouchers for free recycling or disposal of your old televisions, computers, cell phones and other electronics at the Alameda County Computer Resource Center booth, near 1275 Solano at Masonic.
  • Visit the Green Chamber of Commerce at 1869 Solano Near Fresno
  • Check out Albany/Ford Subaru and their new line of environmentally friendly vehicles at 1216 and 1330 Solano.
  • Learn about other free energy programs and rebates for your home and business at the other booths in that block.
